The Lost City of the Tayronas
This world-renowned trek will take you deep into the mystical jungle-laden mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, declared the most important concentration of biodiversity for preservation on Earth. Here you will discover one of the world’s most important archaeological ruins – “The Lost City” or ‘Ciudad Perdida’ as it’s known locally.
Re-live the moment when archaeologist explorers acted upon rumours of an ancient ruin – long forgotten and hidden deep in the depths of the Sierra’s folds and valleys – by embarking on a search from the searing sea-level heat of the Caribbean to the cooler, Andean airs high above.
The site was left by the Tayronas some 350 years ago, not long after the arrival of the Spanish. Jungle paths, stunning waterfalls and amazing natural pools, all amidst a towering green mountain landscape are just some of the highlights of this adventure.
Most importantly however, is the cultural context that you’ll experience, passing through indigenous settlements of the people that now inhabit the Sierra, among them the Kogis who are the direct descendants of the Tayronas.
Colombia’s archaeological and anthropological heritage sites are gaining worldwide recognition as to their importance in Pre-Columbian civilization and The Lost City is at the forefront.
